A - To start a return:

A1) Start by going to http://www.taxsoftware.com 

A2) Click on “Click here to start your Tax return;”

 
A3) Click on ACCEPT ;  
A4) This is the START page.

Click on NEW at the top of the page;

 
A5) Fill in the name and address web page;  
A6) Select Excise Tax and the correct tax year;

Click on NEXT;

 
A7) Select Form 2290; For Simplified version please also check the "Simplified Version" check box.

Click on NEXT;

 
A8) On this next page please make sure to complete all the mandatory information such as Officer's name, title, phone number and e-mail address.

Click on NEXT;

A9) Select the appropriate boxes on this page and click on NEXT. Please note that the boxes for "Address Change", "Final Return", and "VIN Correction" are used only for printing purposes, they cannot be e-filed.
A10) To enter Taxable VINs on Schedule 1, please check the box that says "If you are filing any tax vehicles check here."

Make sure to enter the date the vehicles are being placed in service.

Then click on
NEXT.

To create a spreadsheet please see Section C.

Click on NEXT to get out of this page.

Click on the BATCH PRINT button to print all the entries at once.

A11) To enter suspended VINs on Schedule 1, please check the box that says "If you are filing any suspended vehicles check here."

Click on NEXT until the Taxable VIN page shows up.

Click on NEXT to get out of this page.

Click on the BATCH PRINT button to print all the entries at once.

A12) This page will show you the totals for all the taxable and suspended vehicles, sorted by category.

Click on NEXT.

A13) To claim credits please check the box that says "If you are taking any credits for.........check here.

Click on NEXT until you get to the Credits Schedule page.

The reasons for taking credits can be: used less than 5,000 miles last tax year, sold, put out of service, filed with the wrong weight and paid less taxes, made a typo on the VIN, or filed for the wrong tax year.

Click on the BATCH PRINT button to print all the entries at once.

 

A14) If you need to amend a return to change the form of payment of your taxes due, please check the Amended Return box and click on NEXT.

Then click on NEXT and enter your previous transmission ID and the month of acceptance and in the example below.

The acceptance ID will be on the e-mail that was sent to you at the same time you received your stamped copy of schedule 1. Form more details please see 2290 F&Q.

 

 

A15) When you arrive to this page you can see all the totals for the Schedules that you have completed so far.

If you need need to complete Form 2290 Part II, please check the box at the bottom of the page.

Click on NEXT.

 
A16) For each Schedule you need to complete, please check the appropriate box and click on NEXT.

 

Please remember that those Schedules are not mandatory and you may not really need them.  You can click on the HELP button at the top of the page to make sure the schedule applies to you.

 
A17) If you check boxes 8a. and 8b., the Suspended VIN Statement page will show up when you click on NEXT.

Click on the BATCH PRINT button to print all the entries at once.

A18) If you check the box on line 9, the Statement In Support of Suspension page will show up after clicking on NEXT to get to that page.

Click on the BATCH PRINT button to print all the entries at once.

A19) If you need to use the "Beginning of Year Inventory Reasonable Cause Explanation Statement, please click on the button that says "New Stmt" next to the title.

 

Complete the statement and click on BACK to go back to this page.

Then click on NEXT to move forward.

A20) You must complete the signature page, which is Form 8453-EX.

On this page can select the form of payment you will use to pay the taxes due to the IRS.

Please see Section D for your options in more detail.

Click on NEXT.

 

A21) Please make sure all the information on this is completed.  You should see red frames on the fields when it is missing information.

You can click on the PRINT button from this page and a PDF form 8453-EX will pop up with your data in it.  You need sign this form, print it, and fax to 301-320-1216 or e-mail to help@taxsoftware.com

Click on NEXT.

 
A22) This is the Review  page.  It lists all the pages that you completed on your return.  A green line with a check mark means that all the info looks ok.  A black line means that page is not completed. A red line means there is an error on the page.  To go back to each page, please click on it.

You can click on the REVIEW button at any time form the other pages to see how you are doing.

Click on the START button after here.

B- To enter  VINs on Schedule 1:

On this screen please check the box to file taxable vehicles.

Click on NEXT.

On the next screen start by entering the first VIN on the screen.  Enter also the weight of the vehicle.  When you click on the TAB button on your keyboard, the VIN will replace the word "New#1" inside the list box at the top of the page;

Click on the “New#2” word and fill out the second VINs information.

Follow these steps until you entered all the VINs.

C- To create a spreadsheet:

IMPORTANT - YOU MUST FOLLOW OUR INSTRUCTIONS TO CREATE A SPREADSHEET.  IF YOU MAKE UP YOUR OWN TEMPLATE IT WILL NOT WORK.

You can always click on the EXPORT button and create a spreadsheet if you have a very large number of vehicles. A spreadsheet that will pop up.  You can type the data on the proper columns.

Here is the explanation of the codes on the top of the template:

Please do not remove or add any other columns to the template.

The Key column starts at zero and end on the last VIN.

You can only add data as shown.

(a)     (a) Vehicle Identification Number. That goes under column with code 500.(b) Taxable gross weight (in pounds).  That goes under column with code 520.

The software will figure out the correct category based on the weight of the vehicle.

When you finish entering the data on the template, it will look like this.  Save your spreadsheet in your computer as a CSV file. Go back to the web site and click on the IMPORT button.  A Window should open.  Select your file and click on OPEN.

All the data on the spreadsheet will import to the screen and populate like this.

There is not limit on how many vehicles you can add to the spreadsheet and import to the web site.

 

D- To pay your taxes due to the IRS.

D1) To pay your taxes through a bank account:

Please make the selections as shown in the screen below. You must check box boxes under Bank Account Direct Deposit.

Click on NEXT and enter your bank account on the screen shown below.

Then click on NEXT.

 

D3) To pay your taxes using EFTPS

Please check the EFTPS box.  You need to go directly to https://www.eftps.gov/eftps and make your own payment on the same day your return is accepted.

 

D3) To pay your taxes by check

Please select the "Check or Money order" option. When mailing a check you are required to fax a letter to us that will be attached to your file when it goes to the IRS.

You must scan the letter and e-mail to help@taxsoftware.com along with your signed form 8453-EX. Please do not fax or the letter will not be processed. When you are paying taxes by check the signed form 8453-EX is mandatory, a PIN will not be enough for the IRS.

E- To pay for Taxsoftware.com's e-filing services:

Select your file and click on the PAY button at the top of your web pages.

Enter your credit card information on the screen shown below and click on SUBMIT FORM.

Please remember that if you have more than 100 VINs there will be an extra charge. 

F- To Edit:

From the same computer where you entered your data click on the bar that says “Click here to do your tax return;”

Go back to the START page.

Click on the file inside the gray box, and then click on the EDIT icon at the top.

 

 

E4) You can edit your return as many times as you want, until you are sure it is correct. Make sure you print and check it before you e-file. There is no limit of time for you to have access to you return, but make sure you follow the IRS deadlines.

 

G- To print:

From the same computer where you entered your data go to the page shown above "Taxsoftware.com Start Web Page".

Click on the PRINT ALL button to print you entire tax return, or click on EDIT and select the specific page that you wish to print and click on PRINT to print just the form on that page.

You can print your return as many times as you want, until you are sure it is correct. Make sure you print and check it before you e-file. There is no limit of time for you to have access to you return, but make sure you follow the IRS deadlines.

When you are using ACROBAT, make sure the ANNOTATIONS or COMMENTS box is checked on the print dialog screen. Depending on the version you have, it could say “Print documents and annotations,” or similar language.  Make sure you are using Acrobat 5.05 or later. Earlier versions of Acrobat may not print correctly. If you have a color printer, make sure you have blue color, or set it to print blank only. H- To e-file:

H1) From the same computer where you entered your data go to the page shown above "Taxsoftware.com Start Web Page".

Please remember to print, sign, and fax Form 8453-EX to 301-320-1216, or e-mail to help@taxsoftware.com.

Click on the file, then press the E-FILE button. The return is not e-filed until you press the E-FILE button.

H2) Then you must press the CONFIRM button. If the CONFIRM button does not show up you can manually launch the web page from Internet Explorer with the Browse button to find the file c:\btax\senddata.html If there is a balance due press the "Click to Pay".

You will receive an email within minutes indicating your forms have been ACCEPTED. Your stamped Schedule 1 copy will be sent by e-mail at the same time of your acceptance

If you do not receive this email, your forms have NOT been E-Filed. The E-Mail will contain and acknowledgement file #. You will need this number for proof of your E-File if you need to later contact the IRS.

If there is any problem with your return or the IRS requires additional information you will receive an email indicating the file was REJECTED.

Then you need to return to the web site and fix any errors. You can see your IRS errors on the REVIEW screen by pressing the ERRORS button.
